I am trying to gather all the documents I need to enroll my two children in their base school now that we are under contract to buy a home in Wake County. I just had one clarifying question...

The WCPSS website states that we'll need "A certified copy of your child's brith certificate" -- does this mean I have to obtain a "certified" copy of each child's birth certificate from the state in which they were born (neither were born in North Carolina) or can I just bring their original birth certificates to show when registering?

Define "original."

If the original has the raised seal (and it probably does) then that is fine. They are probably thinking most people don't want to carry around copies of the original (but that's what I always use).

Yep. You're right.

I have NO clue where I put my originals for my kids. I assume they're in my document boxes/picture archives. I grab certified copies whenever I need them. All mine were born in Raleigh.

As I recall, any copy with a raised seal will do.

Another question, will a housing contract work if you haven't closed yet?

usually, unless it's a hot or capped school. At least, before the last 3 years it was sufficient.

Yes, we registered the kids with a contract to buy, but the secretary did tell us that we'd have to come back with the proof of closing (HUD statement) afterward. We closed before school started so not an issue, but she was ready for us when we came back.
