Exactly...to be honest, I am surprized they've gotten this far.

YAY!
I was so excited when I read your title. Then I read the article... what a let down. I thought smoking was already banned in government buildings.

But honestly the smoking thing is not as bad here as I had anticipated. I haven't been to any eatteries in the Triangle where there was smoking. But don't get me started on where my folks live in Eastern NC.
cough cough choke

This is interesting becasue I work in state government in one of the many huge buildings in the state government complex in Downtown Raleigh and I can tell you first hand that you can't smoke in any of those buildings. Maybe there are random satellite state government offices that you can but I have never seen anybody smoke in any of the state government buildings I have ever been in.

FWIW, I went to an Outback Steakhouse last weeknd with a family member who smokes. The Hostess informed us that they recently went "Smoke Free".

I have noticed a lot of the restaurants in this area are already smoke free. You want to see tons of smokers. I use to live in Richmond Virginia the home of Phillip Morris! You could smoke almost everywhere in Richmond!

If anyone remembers, this past legislative session, the general assembly actually took up the issue statewide regarding restaurants, etc. At the end of the day, it failed....I am guessing some rural representatives got cold feet. But, it is a promising sign that the legislature actually addressed the issue. I remember reading a poll with the last year that showed every age demographic in every region of the state supported banning smoking in restaurants. I hope it comes to pass in the next few years.

Eventually it will probably come. Where I live (Norfolk/VaBch) both cities intend in the spring to propose a bill to ban smoking locally.

Like NRG pointed out - a lot of the state agencies have already taken it upon themselves to ban smoking in their own facilities. At this point - i'd be curious to see which agency actually has a building where smoking is allowed.
