If you accepted a job in Fayetteville, where would you personally choose to live with a reasonable commute and why? Specifically, where would you live if you're terrified of Fayetteville and have no desire to live in it?
Are Southern Pines/Pinehurst/ Aberdeen the best options or are there any other nice towns a little closer to Fayetteville?
Well, there's no reason to be terrified of Fayetteville. There is a fair amount of property crime (cars broken into, sometimes houses broken into), but there's not that much random violent crime. Most of the violent crime there is directed against someone specifically, like domestic violence or gang activity. If you're not in those situations chances are very slim that any violent crime would come your way.
I don't live in Fayetteville because I don't find it as stimulating or interesting culturally as the Triangle. Frankly, it's a little boring with lots of chain eateries, but certainly not terrifying. I grew up there. My parents lived there for almost 60 years until we moved my mom up to the Triangle to be near us. My 90+ yr old aunt still lives there and up until recently on her own in her own home and I never worried for her safety.
If I accepted a job in Fayetteville I would live in Fayetteville, but y'know, it's my hometown and there's a reason I left, and I ain't going back, so I wouldn't have taken that job. Just not the place for me, but I'm not scared there any more than I would be scared in Colorado Springs.
I agree with PoppyDog, there is no reason to be terrified to Fayetteville. There are lots of great neighborhoods there. You didn't say where you'll be working or if you have family, etc.
If you are considering driving a bit farther think of the difficulty presented by a commute. Gas and time are wasted and you are more likely to be killed in a car accident than be a victim of crime in Fayetteville.
Have you spent time with a good realtor to explore neighborhoods closer to your place of work?

This pretty much. Fayetteville is my home town too, but I feel the same way. I left and don't plan on going back if I don't have to. I just don't find it culturally stimulating.
Thanks for the input everyone! Reassuring to hear that I don't really need to worry about being affected by the violent crime. I will stop fretting over that part. We just moved from DC, and before that I was living in Chicago, so I would definitely be missing the culturally stimulating activities we had in those areas. However, when I visited my friend out in Southern Pines last year I thought that would be a great place to live. I thought it was beautiful and peaceful out in that area! Refreshing after DC especially. We love Raleigh and would love to move there, but hey, I guess we can visit whenever we want.
I'm really glad to hear though there's no reason for me to be terrified. I mean, I made it in Chicago, so I don't know what my deal is. I guess I just honestly haven't ever really heard any good things about Fayetteville, sadly. But I'm sure there are lots of good areas to be found. There still is a possibility my husband might be getting a job offer in Seattle or Portland Maine, so we will see where we land. I have to say though, the cost of living is a strong advantage with Fayetteville.

We just moved from DC, and before that I was living in Chicago, so I would definitely be missing the culturally stimulating activities we had in those areas. However, when I visited my friend out in Southern Pines last year I thought that would be a great place to live. I thought it was beautiful and peaceful out in that area! Refreshing after DC especially. We love Raleigh and would love to move there, but hey, I guess we can visit whenever we want.
