So lived in an apartment complex in Raleigh for three years, have renewed every time lease renewal time has come up. I again signed a lease renewal for six more months, but would like to change to month to month. My lease does not expire until 8/15, can I legally change from six months to a month to month giving a sixty day notice to vacate?
Nope unless the lease has a clause to that effect.
Not so much "nope", but the correct answer would be:
1. Read your lease, it tells what you can or can't do, and
B. If you can't do it per the lease, you should have a FRIENDLY talk with your landlord.
I wanted to break my lease about six months ago, and I went to the landlord, they gave me all the options, the costs, and ramifications. I made an informed choice.
I signed a new lease in 2010 and realized that it was a poor decision about 4 months into the new lease starting. I knew if they said no that eventually I'd have to accept it, but I persisted for a few weeks and they finally agreed as long as they found someone to fill it, which they did about 2 weeks later. Worth talking to them and even better if you have a legit reason. If you JUST signed the lease, don't you have 3 days to back out of a contract? Or does that only apply to certain things?

The three day rule is for door-to-door type sales.
Right now, it's likely landlords can get new tenants relatively easily. Can't hurt to ask if your landlord might work with you.
