Besides a single family home, what rental housing type is the quietest?

We had a corner unit town home when we first got married. What that meant is we only shared one wall. We never heard our neighbors. Newer townhomes use such good insulation in the ajoining walls that you really don't hear your neighbors. Plus there is no one above or below you so you don't hear the foot steps. A duplex would offer that same advantage. We had a condo on the middle floor of a 3 story condo complex. We heard the above people like crazy. Down stairs only occasionally.

Our apt is an end unit and quiet.

Very rarely hear the upstairs neighbor.

Apartments and condos that are constructed with concrete subfloors are usually quieter than those that are stick built (wood). Also, consider a top floor apartment...you won't have to hear anyone walking upstairs or hear any plumbing sounds come down your walls. End unit townhouses are another good bet....but, keep in mind, it only takes one really loud neighbor to really mess it up.

We had a unit on the second story of a garden apartment. Before that we had only ever lived in high rises. It was a nightmare. The man who lived above us kept strange hours and jumped up and down and I was commuting 3 hours each way so I desperately needed my sleep. I would never do that again.

Our end-unit townhome-style apartment was quiet. Only occasionally did I ever hear the people on the other side of the two pieces of a wall we shared, and we were our own upstairs and downstairs in a town house layout.
