Would someone go to jail if they took over (aka started to live there) an abandoned piece of land or building in Durham NC?

How do I know I'll be safe from the law when practicing Adverse Possession. I would love to own a home in Durham NC, but I can't even afford a home through normal assistance means via Habitat for Humanity ($100,000 and I wouldn't even own the land). I'm currently renting, but paying my rent is making me fall behind on all my other bills. I just don't feel like I can afford housing anymore in this area. I might have to leave, but I don't want to. I have an income I just can't afford to even rent it seems.

I know I would have to pay property taxes and all that while practicing adverse possession. I feel that I could better pay that then I could rent in this area. I think I could pay for a low mortgage but I JUST DON'T QUALIFY!

So, again, will I be locked up in jail for trying to find affordable housing by means of adverse possession? Where can I go online to read the laws for my area (Durham NC USA)?

I'm not a RE lawyer, but Adverse Possession should not be confused with the practice of "squatting".

Adverse Possession
n. a means to acquire title to land through obvious occupancy of the land, while claiming ownership for the period of years set by the law of the state where the property exists. This can arise when a rancher fences in a parcel contending he was to get title from some prior owner, and then grazes cattle on the property for many years without objection by the title holder. Payment of real property taxes and making improvements (such as paving or fencing) for the statutory period (varies by state) are evidence of adverse possession but cannot be used by a land grabber with no claim to title other than possession.

Yeah - that's called squatting. Not that much different than the guy that used to live the abandoned tobacco warehouse near my old house....

...he didn't have internet access though so I guess you'd have him beat there.
