Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreen Co. is acquiring 76 retail store locations in North Carolina from regional pharmacy chain Kerr Drug, as well as its specialty pharmacy business and distribution center. Kerr Drug employs more than 2,000 in North Carolina; terms of the sale were not disclosed.
The original Kerr Drug store opened at Raleigh’s Cameron Village in 1951. Owner Banks Kerr sold his stores to a subsidiary of J.C. Penney in 1995.
I remember seeing my first Kerr Drug in 1990 and it was on Kerr Avenue in Wilmington.
