In Chapel Hill and want a rather small glazed ham (4-5 lbs) for our small family holiday meal. There are all sorts of turkeys and a few hams available from local grocery stores and Boston Market but I would like a personal recommendation. I don't think there is a honey glazed ham anywhere near us and besides their hams are way too big for our needs. Thanks.

If it were me, I'd make the drive to Durham and get a Honeybaked ham, even if it's larger than I need. Makes great leftovers (even freeze some), and you can use the bone for some great soup!

I haven't tried either for ham, but I would imagine Earth Fare or Whole Foods would be good. We've had WF turkey in the past, and been pleased.

I usually get a spiral sliced ham from Sam's club, but IMHO you can find one at any grocery store. Not sure why it needs to be ordered. Just don't over cook it and you can't go wrong!

I just happened to read an article in Consumer Report about the best hams and they are in order from best to still very good:
1, Honeybaked Ham
2. Smithfield Brown Sugar Cured and Spiral Sliced
3. Applewood Farms Spiral Sliced
4. Hickory Farms Spiral Sliced Honeygold.
You should be able to get any of those locally.

Honeybaked ham. Yes number one. I have also bought a Kirkland signature from Costco. Spiral sliced. Very good.

If you want something different, Red Hot and Blue offers smoked hams during the holidays. Very good.

I am not really a ham person, but I was assigned to bring the ham one year and picked one up at Fresh Market. It was with the bone (although I think they did have boneless) and was a very good price. Everyone seemed to really like it.

Except it's a hell of a commute from Chapel Hill, NC to Von's in California.
