Whenever I watch the real estate shows on HGTV, Fine Living, or TLC, the people always complain about popcorn ceilings.

While they're not my 'favorite' choice, I don't hate them the way the people in the shows do.

My house has them...is this something I might need to address when I get ready to re-sell?

I personally think they make a home look dated.
The problem I have with them is cleaniness. They are magnet for dust bunnies.
They are great in older homes that may have imperfections but again a home looks dated to me it might as well have shag carpet.

Removing it is very easy and quick to do but very messy. I dont know how old your home is but I would use caution if it is older home due to it could stir up possible asbestos. If you are uncertain remove a little bit like out of the closet and have it tested or done professionally.

I really hate them. It started to be something I looked at when looking at homes. A low ceiling with popcorn started to be a real turnoff and I was happy when they were smoother. Would it stop me from buying a house that I really liked otherwise.....No.

When shopping new construction a little over a year ago, I found some builders that listed the popcorn ceiling as an amenity and others that noted smooth ceilings as an amenity. I really think it's person preference.

If you can't smooth out the imperfections enough to get a flat finish then textured plaster is a nice alternative to a spray on finish.

That's funny; I was just looking up going "I don't like these ceilings too much." What is involved in getting rid of the popcorn? Just scrape and paint? Would I need to sand it? Do you replace it with some kind of tiling?

When my wife and I were looking for homes we found 1 builder that had popcorn ceilings as a standard. Needless to say that was the reason we did not go with them. It would have been an 8k upgrade to get rid of them. WHAT??!! While popcorn ceilings are not the worst thing you could have in your house, they definitely make your home look dated. Most people do not like them so it may be best to either change them out or offer a credit towards replacing them. Whichever seems easier for you. GOOD LUCK!!!

Textured ceilings are an easy way to cover over imperfections. It takes a lot of work to get a smooth finish. $8k was probably about right.
