While there are a few bro-grammer type places where age, sex, and hipster quotient all matter, I haven't found it a problem. I'm in my 40s and several friends, coworkers, former coworkers, etc. are as well. All of them who have looked for a job in the last several years have quickly gotten offers. One that started looking at the start of the year has 3 offers he is weighing from heavyweights in the area.

Bro-grammer. LOL.

Nah... I meant more that not every 40-something and older person is going to be flexible as a 20-30 something... generally speaking.

I suspect that you and your friends have kept it youthful and you're at the top of your game. Hence the offers.

. . . not to mention, they likely had good contacts(?) at those places. . . i.e. did not start "cold". This REALLY helps. But I have been wrong before--just ask my wife!

This is the OP's husband. Thanks for all the great advice!

Bronto Software looks pretty cool. I'd work there for the t-shirt alone.

Regarding age discrimination... I'm in my early 40's and I work for a startup in Seattle. Maybe it's different in Raleigh, but I've never felt like (or been treated like) a dinosaur in the office. There are even some people there that are older than me (shocking, I know)

Does anyone have an opinion on SAS? Is all the hype deserved? How about Red Hat?

Is there a "Maker" community in the Triangle?

Some other companies to checkout are Metlife and Fidelity Investments. Both are doing a lot of hiring in the area. I believe Metlife still have a pension. Fidelity has an excellent 401k match, bonuses, profit sharing and benefits. Best of luck.

My neighbors and friends who work for SAS are absolutely pleased with the work environment and benefits. Since you have startup background, you could check out the startup scene here.

What's a "Maker" community?

Maker : A hobbyist that likes to make things in their spare time. Think Arduino, Raspberry Pi, robotics, laser cutters, 3D printers.

Sure is Maker Faire North Carolina but the tech shop closed last year. Good luck with your search.

Yes there is a Maker community. I have friends into it.

SAS is huge, but very nice on-campus benefits (on-site daycare, piano player in the cafeteria, gym, etc) as well as the benefits package. Red Hat is a little hipper.
