Does such a thing exist in the RTP area? I'm pregnant and have a toddler. We live in a neighborhood where the homes are really close together. Our neighbor recently installed an outdoor fireplace. Besides the smoke smell in and around our home, I'm not keen on my kids breathing the chemicals from these wood fires.

I know most people will not understand, nor agree but at the end of the day wood smoke and cig smoke have a lot of the same hazardous chemicals and as parents we care about this exposure.

Does anyone know of an RTP neighborhood where outdoor wood burning is prohibited?

Thanks.

I have never encountered a neighborhood of free standing houses that had a prohibition on an outdoor fire pit or fireplace.

Seems like the best bet to avoid this kind of thing would be to live in a more rural environment where you are not close to a neighbor.

Unfortunately the Triangle has quite a bit of trouble with high Ozone levels in the summer. I would be more concerned about that. There are frequent Code Orange Ozone days and code reds as well. https://xapps.ncdenr.org/aq/ForecastCenter

I don't think you'll find a neighborhood of single family homes that bans outdoor burning. That would be also banning grilling out which is hugely popular. Maybe one of our realtors knows about such a place, though.

The Town of Cary requires a permit for any outdoor burning. That being said, I can't attest to how strictly that ordinance is adhered to or even whether it applies to things like chimineas or outdoor fireplaces. I have neighbors who have recreational fires pretty regularly in the summer months, and they do become an annoyance when the air is stagnant and the smoke hangs for hours.

Yeah, I shouldn't have used the phrase "outdoor burning". That's more like burning leaves, etc.

What the OP is talking about would be more like chimineas, etc. I think those are not uncommon, nor are fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, grills, wood burning outdoor pizza ovens, etc.

I think your best bet would be to move to a neighborhood with larger lots so at least the smoke can dissipate if you get another neighbor with an outdoor fireplace, etc.

You should talk to your physician to validate the basis for your concern.
