I thought James Taylor was from Chapel Hill. They even have a bridge named after him in CH.

But back on topic ... yes, if you can find a house near the historic part of Hillsborough, you could easily walk to the handful of restaurants on Churton Street. They even have a blues club if you're into that sort of thing. Weaver Street Market is opening a location there, so a grocery store will soon be in walking distance for people living in that area, too.

Yes, James Taylor grew up in Chapel Hill. Check his Wikipedia entry.

Hillsborough is a fine town, but this thread is over a month old and seems to have only come back to life to discuss Pei Wei. Is the original poster still looking for ideas?

We just moved to Cary in August and we spend a great deal of time in Downtown Cary in the post office area. The downtown there is so cute. It has several restaurants (no chains) and a drug store with a soda fountain. There are also art galleries, antique shops, the post office, a bakery, the Library, and some other small retail places that I haven't really explored yet. Prucarolinas.com has a map search function that you can use. The intersection that I am talking about is Chatham and Acadamy street. Good luck!
