I have an 8 old daughter who really want a dog but we cannot get one yet due to schedule and allergy (son) issues. I am looking for volunteering opportunity involving any animal but preferably dogs that we can get involved with maybe once or twice a month. She really loves animals and I want to nature this while we figure out my son's allergies.
Any suggestions in the Cary/Raleigh area?
Thanks

I know when we lived in Phoenix, children that young were not allowed to volunteer at the shelters (nor were they supposed to be in the dog parks).

But maybe these links will help.

Volunteer and Community Service Opportunities in the Triangle

SPCA of Wake County: Youth Volunteer Opportunities - SPCA of Wake County (though I believe this program may have been discontinued - worth calling them for advice)

Keep tweens, teens busy with these volunteer opportunities :: WRAL.com

Compassionate Kids - Volunteering with Children

Note that in nearly all cases, a parent or grandparent has to be with the child at all times.

If nothing is available, perhaps one of your neighbors would be open to having your daughter walk their dog sometimes. Be sure it's a well trained, preferably smaller dog. I know I'd pay a kid to come walk my pooch several days a week!

Good luck!

I think it is just the Teens Program that is closing, effective June 1
"Teens Program is Closing (Opportunities for Youths 15 and older)"
Minors can still volunteer, but must be accompanied by an adult.

The Wake County Animal Center requires that volunteers be at least 16

Ironically, I just took my dog Riley to the vet and was flipping through a magazine. There was an article about a Cary business that allows (and wants) children to train dogs at their facility. The BEST part (for the OP) is that they have loaner dogs for kids to train when those kids can't have dogs of their own! What a terrific idea.

Took a photo of the contact information:
