Is Father's Day a big travel day in the area? We were thinking of driving out the beach for the day, via 40 but I did not know if it would be a heavy traffic day. We would head out in the morning and return around 7pm if that makes a difference.

Every weekend in the summer is a heavy travel day to/from the beach.

Even in-season I don't consider the beach in-bound/out-bound traffic to be particularly bad. I'd roll the dice and go.

I assume you're headed to the Wilmington area? Saturday traffic on I-40 will be much better than Friday evening headed East or Sunday afternoon headed West.

Thank you all! This would be our first trip to the beach here (yes via the Wilmington area) so I was not sure what to expect traffic wise. Thank you again.

Check out the historic section of Wilmington if you have time. I use to stay at the Front Street Inn and the Graystone Inn for long weekends there. You can walk to all the restaurants/bars from either and that section has a really cool vibe. Highly recommended for a romantic getaway!

Your bigger worry will be parking once you get there -- go early to get a spot in one of the pay lots!

Friday traffic heading to the beach is usually heavy around 4 PM and again at 6 PM. If you were leaving Friday at 7 PM, you'd find almost no traffic heading towards the beach!

Sat. early morning will have less traffic than later in the day as most weekly rentals are from Saturday 3 PM to Saturday 10 AM.
