My husband, our children and myself are looking to relocate to either Raleigh or Charlotte and I would like to get some feedback from real people as to what we can expect from your city.
I have four daughters and moving to a nice quiet neighborhood would be ideal, but my target rent would be no more than $850/mo just to start. Honestly, given that amount, what can I afford? I basically need a 3 bedroom house or apartment, but I still want to live in a good neighborhood, with good schools that are close to job opportunities.

Welcome to the forum. What type of work do you do? Do you know what area you would most likely be working in? This may play a big role as to where in the triangle you will want to find housing. If you work in N. Raleigh or Downtown Raleigh you will want to consider different options than if you work in the Research Triangle Park (for commute reasons). Similarly if you find employment in Durham or Chapel Hill you would probably want to consider the housing options closer to those areas. There are many hopusing options that are close to job opportunities, but your field of work may help you narrow down what areas have the most opportunities for you.

FWIW, I think you should be able to find a nice 2 and sometimes 3 bedroom apartment for $850 in many areas. I don't know much about house rentals. Others may be able to give more input on that.
If you share some info about your present living condition in DC I can probably give you some advice. For example, what part of DC do you live in now? If its NW then you’ll probably have a hard time finding something comparable here in the price range you mentioned. If you’re relocating from SE Washington then just about any part of Raleigh should be an improvement.

It's kind of funny but the quadrants of DC and Raleigh are very similar in so far as what is considered the good areas and areas that are not so good.
You will like Raleigh. I am from Richmond originally. Raleigh is growing so rapidly and is very culturally diverse. I live in the country about 45 min from the city where the cost of living is extremely cheap and work in the city where the pay is good. The town I live in still very much small town america. Wake County schools are supposedly really on top of things. Most of them go on a year round schedule and from what my clents say the teachers are good. Franklin County schools are decent but could use improvement. I have seen houses in Wake Forest in your price range in decent neighborhoods. Shopping is close in and traffic isn't so bad there too. We have the new 540 that really helps with traffic, too. Raleigh doesn't really have much of a skyline yet but they are building down town so there will be on eventually . You can also go further south towards Holly Springs and Fuquay-Varina to get lower rents with some space and decent (quieter) areas. It all depends on where you intend to work and what kind of commute you want. Compared to DC, traffic in the Triangle is a breeze.
