We have a lot of large banana trees in our garden and my teenage son is thinking about making a little money by selling the leaves to those who use it for cooking. I am in support of his entrepreneurial spirit.

Any ideas where one might buy banana leaves in this area? Maybe he can sell them to those markets.

We live on the southern edge of Raleigh (not far from Cary Crossroads).

I've seen banana leaves at Grand Asia in Cary and El Mandolo in Raleigh. But I foresee two possible problems with ypur plan.

1. I suspect they would be considered food. They have been grown in a totally unlicensed, uninspected facility.

2. Unless you are multilingual, I'd expect to have some language barriers when discussing this with store managers. (That's NOT a racial comment. I shop in both stores regularly and have to deal with it every time I ask a question. But I think it's fun, and the store employees always try to be helpful, albeit with various levels of success.

Another option might be to encourage his culinary skills by cooking stuff that uses those banana leaves. Or contact some Thai restaurants who often use them as tablemats and for decoratiins.

I believe banana leaves are never consumed. They are typically used in cooking as "plates" or to "help" cook food. That being said, I grew up around folks that used banana leaves in lieu of plates. I enjoyed some of those meals too.

You're absolutely correct. However, they are frequently used to wrap foods for cooking. Like tamales (tamals, in this case). So they are still touching food, and I suspect that resellers might be very concerned about where they came from.

Maybe donate them to a church/temple with a large Asian and South Indian populations. Some Hispanic cooks use them as well.

I still say do a cooking project. Then make mulch.
