Hi! Went for a walk through Umstead Park over the weekend. Saw some amazing mushrooms. Since all of this rain we have loads of mushrooms in our yard now as well. Are any of these mushrooms poisonous to dogs? The squirrels have been eating the white ones because I see them sitting on my swing chomping their mushrooms. My rescue dog has been vomiting with diarhea today. I have noticed other mushrooms nibbled on in the yard. I am wondering if there's a way to know which mushrooms are bad? Thanks
I'm not sure, but I don't want mine to eat them. Mine pretty much leaves them alone, but, I've been finding a lot of green acorns around and those are a big no no. My dog is obsessed with those and she does get sick when she eats them. They are highly toxic.
There are plenty of good mushrooms popping up and plenty of bad ones. Amanita's are especially poisonous and should be avoided. My advice is to find someone who is absolutely sure of shroom identification and leave the squirrels to their own devices.
Definitely stay away from mushrooms and keep your dog away from mushrooms if you don't know what you're doing. There are many edible varieties and I have friends who go on mushroom hunts as well as grow them and are experts at identifying them, but I'm not and I do not wildcraft mushrooms. There are many mushrooms that can kill a person, and yes, they can grow in your yard. Of the many species of amanita, the white anamita virosa — the destroying angel — is the most potent. There are others, though, that are also bad. If you don't know, and you really need to KNOW — not be pretty sure, leave them all alone.
Mushrooms that are toxic to people or dogs may be eaten by squirrels and other animals with no ill effects. Don't go by what the squirrels eat as to whether it's safe.

Same goes for the mushrooms you see Hippies consume....just because they eat them doesn't mean its a good idea...
Thanks guys. I dont think it was mushrooms this time. I have however enjoyed taking photos of all of the new mushrooms popping up at the parks while I take my walks. I have been keeping a close eye on her and she doesnt seem to wander off, she is my Velcro dog. If anyone knows anything about Australian Cattle Dogs they will know that they stick to your side. My little terrier mix rescue is a different story.
