you won't have any issues finding a nice home with reasonable privacy in the triangle unless you limit yourself by age of home to something newer, and especially if you also limit geography to "Cary" or "Morrisville"
Check out the North Hills area of Raleigh towards Glenwood and Glen Eden Ave/Rd. And North Ridge Country Club. Also, at the very north end of Six Forks, there are some older and newer homes on large lots. Where will your office be?
I can go higher if needed, cost wise. Taxes are a lot lower down there and I have no kids, so using mortgage calculators online I could probably go up to 650K before I start to feel uncomfortable.
I'm surprised that my budget isn't considered high enough for the area. I see so many huge homes for much less than 500K, are these subdivisions that much more pricey than the others?
I live in North Raleigh on a 1.1 acre lot. My house is just around 3k square feet, four bedrooms, three full baths and a ton of bonus room styled space (though really more of an addition than a space over the garage). I can go literally months at a time without seeing my neighbors and can only occasionally hear them outside (and there are kids on both sides). I paid $345k for my house and can buy a similarly configured one in my neighborhood for just a shade over that.
So for my neighborhood you can afford two homes with your budget, it's puhlenty high enough.
