Hello! we recently purchased a home that has a 120 gallon amerigas tank outside, not hooked up. previous owner said they did not use the logs for the 5 years they lived in the house. because of how expensive it is to fill a tank, rent the tank etc. and because we just want to occasionally switch on the fireplace, im thinking of buying a 100 pound cylinder and taking it to be filled myself. my question is, i think i still need someone to come out and hook it up and check all my parts for safety etc since the logs have not been used in so long. so i have to call amerigas or farrell or are there independent people who do this kind of thing? a plumber? a handyman? not sure who to ask for this service. in in the garner area...thanks!
Any person who was moderately handy could probably do this, but I would strongly recommend NOT doing it yourself.
Pay a licensed plumber to come and do it right. This is not like wiring up you TV to the cable box. If it's done wrong, and a gas line leaks, you could loose your house, family, etc.
The cost vs risk makes it a no-brainer to get someone experienced and make sure it's done safely.

There is a small family run shop just off of 70 in Garner called F and G Distributors. The lady I knew way back when was Francis Brantley. THEY KNOW THEIR GAS! Loop Road right off of 70 in Garner.
I can't speak for all Propane refillers, but ours will not refill a tank that is not their own. You can buy one from them or pay a rental fee for the use.
I would call around and check before you go through the hassle of hooking up what's there - I'm assuming the tank you have is empty.

F&G is the best. I've done a lot of business with them over the years.
