Hello everyone! My neighbor's kid is 14 years old, and is planning to watch our almost 10 year old son. What is the going rate for that age?

Thanks so much!

My step-daughter was talking a few days ago about paying $10-$12 an hour for someone to be there when a 5 and 3-year-old are sleeping. No child contact whatsoever. And not overnight.

I see older teens or even adults charging $10, but at 14 I was thinking like $6-7? It's for one child almost 10.

I have a 14 year old and I think $6-7 an hour for a 10 year old is perfectly fine.

We have been paying between $8-$10 for babysitters for our toddler. We ask them what their rate for one child is and pretty much all have said that. These are all local high school kids who just watch him for a few hours in the evening. I pay a couple bucks more if it's a college student but at 14, I think that range is expected (from them).

We also round up a little depending on how much else they did. Some do the dishes or tidy up after bed, some just watch the monitor and tv.

My 12 year old daughter gets paid around $5 - $6/hour. When my kids were younger, I would pay adults (pre-school teachers) between $10-$12/hour to watch them. No way would I expect that for my daughter or anyone under 18, quite frankly.

Historically, we've always paid about $10 an hour, and usually rounded up to the nearest $10. Pretty good money as it's watching our son during date nights, which is usually two hours of board games / Mario Kart, and then a couple of hours of tv after he goes to bed. Always high school kids. Same across our last three houses (NC, FL, and VA). We are probably over-paying a bit, but I want my babysitters happy, available when I need them, and it's not an area where I want to bargain hunt :-)
