Hi Zach, I'm from Long Island too. Please don't make the mistake so many people make when they move here from up north and sink your money into a brand new house just because you can. No kids? No reason you should buy right now. Rent and see what you like in the area. The mere fact that you are considering Durham and FV tells me that you're prioritizing this move in the wrong way...not because there is anything wrong with either place but because they essentially have little in common except for being in the Triangle.

hey zach,

My family and i are relocating at the end of the month from NE . We are military Navy as well and we looked at both Durham and F.V . We selected Fv for many reasons one being its proximity to Ft Bragg and commissary, VA hospital and medical (about 40 minutes-35) .Its still about 30 minutes from Raleigh and and about 45 minutes to Durham. I guess the difference for us is that we have children and schools and a more suburban setting was what was important to us . i wasn't comfortable with the numerous "pockets of significant crime" in Durham-I felt like one turn into the wrong neighborhood and I may find myself in the middle of a shootout ( extreme scenario) and plus the school situation there is bad in terms of rating and safety. However being in Durham may afford you a better social atmosphere as young, childless couple - more night life and such . But again FV is not far from DT Raleigh which has its fare share of nice bars and nice restaurants. We have been down several times for sometimes a week at a time . we found our money went much further and more land in FV. Just my opinion hope it helps-
