We currently live in NJ and my husband was offerred a great job in Four Oaks, NC. We have no clue as to where would be the best places to live. We have a 16-yr old daughter and we love quiet neighborhoods but also like going out to restaurants, shopping, and hiking.

Any suggestions?

That's really far from the Triangle. Maybe Clayton would work? Google thinks that would be 1/2 hour. Beyond that, I'd suggest the NC forum vs. the Triangle forum, as Four Oaks isn't really in the Triangle area.

Four Oaks is more like farm country. The rest stops in Smithfield and Selma along I-95 offer the most restaurants and shopping. Clayton would be a good choice if you prefer suburban developments. Check Riverwood, and other developments in Clayton. There is a 28-mile long walking trail along the Neuse River. Johnston County schools get mixed reviews, however.

I would look in Clayton. Growing community; most schools are very good.

I am a big believer in keeping the commute short.
In this instance it may be reasonable to consider to commute the 40 minutes from Raleigh, or 30 minutes from Garner.

For the benefit of the OP, these options would give them the better schools in Wake County. They would have more of the suburban amenities that they may be accustomed to.

Also, Fuquay-Varina and Willow Spring are closer to Four Oaks and still in Wake County, giving about a 40 minute commute.

Where in NJ are you from? Four oaks may give you a bit of culture shock if you are from northern NJ.

Default Clayton

Clayton. Why have long commute when you can have excellent quality of life for your family and a short commute? And disregard all Wake County residents comments about better schools there. High Schools in Clayton Area (Clayton, Corinth-Holder, West Johnston and Cleveland) are excellent. Oor graduates do very well in major universities! Get a realtor to show you some homes in the Clayton area.

We live in North Jersey. I imagine that it is totally different.

You've probably heard a lot of stories of people moving to the Triangle and loving it, maybe you even know some. The heart of the Triangle is not like Four Oaks - have you come and seen that area at all? You may be in for a long commute to get close to what you are used to, unless you are looking to make a huge change or are familiar with a more rural lifestyle.
