In Cary Danny's is pretty good. It is on Tryon Rd next to the hospital.

Ole Time BBQ in Cary is excellent for food and atmosphere.

Bullock's BBQ in Durham near Duke Med is my favorite "authentic" joint in the Triangle.

What do you mean by authentic. Eastern NC BBQ? Texas BBQ? Western NC BBQ?

If by "local" you meant you want the bbq to be Eastern NC bbq, then the only places that still do wood smoked Eastern NC cue locally, that I know of, are Allen and son in Chapel Hill and The Pit in downtown Raleigh. There are many others that do good cue on gas smokers, but those are the only two I know of that cook with wood.

when someone says authentic NC BBQ - I take it to mean the chopped vinegar based BBQ that is popular in this area.

Barbeque Lodge on Capital BLvd used to be good ( haven eaten there in ages, as we make our own...so it may have gone downhill as some places do, but to my knowledge its still pretty good!)

I agree. For Eastern style I'd say Ole Time BBQ (Border of Raleigh/Cary) or Cooper's (Downtown Raleigh). If you want smoked there is Danny's (Cary) and Smokey's Shack - Formerly Rubs (Morrisville). There are others that are very good like Allen & Sons etc. but the original post is asking for Raleigh and Cary so my recommendations are limited to that.

I enjoy Jim's in Chapel Hill. I'm not originally from the area, so I'm not a big fan of the vinegar based stuff. Jim's is good if you're looking for Memphis style (thick, sweet sauce)....awesome pulled pork, brisket, and ribs. I live for BBQ!!

Thumbs up Atmosphere? Hard to beat Cooper's, I think.

Clyde Cooper started serving fine pulled pork barbecue on Davie Street in 1938...
