I guess the low clouds caused the sound to travel a long way. We heard it in Morrisville for sure.
As far as exploding targets, my wife and I often hear what I assume are exploding targets on the weekend when we are on the American Tobacco trail, especially between 64 and the trailhead.
I live in Garner and heard it also! Around 7-7:30 PM. I actually thought it was thunder way off in the distance and pulled up the weather radar on my phone.
We were eating with the patio door open, and it was noticeable, but for some reason didn't have as much impact to us that others are citing.
But, just as the boom died down, an overhead plane came into RDU approach a bit low, and the coincidence of the two sounds led to brief and interesting discussion.
