If you go down 87 through Tar Heel you get to see the world's largest meat processing plant. You might want to keep your windows rolled up.
The dogs noses go straight up in the air when we pass by Smithfield's. Sometimes we get behind a load of hogs heading there. The dogs really go nuts then.
We decided to take some back roads at Lumberton and it was actually nice. We saw a huge mansion and giant turtles crossing the road. It was less stress because people drove like maniacs on the major highways so drove really slow in the left lanes.

We used to take US1 South to 501 (were coming from Sanford though) and always preferred that way to the boring Interstate. Sounds like that's what you did too. It's really kind of a nice drive for most of the way.
Highway 50 to Benson - pick up Highway 242 in Benson - 242 to 701 - 701 to Conway, SC.
My first trip to Myrtle Beach over fifty years ago we used that same route. It was a long, hot ride without air conditioning.
If want scenery...take 130 from 95 south of Lumberton...to 904...to 701...to 9 to beaches. Fair Bluff on the banks of the Lumber River is a beautiful little southern town

I enjoyed it. The highways were congested with slow drivers and people on on our bumpers. It just makes a the trip stressful when that happens.

The section of 242 from where it splits off with 421 until you get to 701 is relatively scenic and enjoyable. I used to incorporate that into my route back when I made the trip a lot, but I'd do 40/95/421 and log some boring highway miles before that.
I used to be able to make the drive from around Gorman St in Raleigh to Cherry Grove (701 to 9) in about 2.5 hours if I didn't catch bad traffic on 421. The other roads would have slow traffic, but I'd usually be able to safely pass without too long of a delay. The last time we took this route, though, my wife was driving and it took us significantly longer (she drives slower anyway, but mainly is very hesitant to pass).
I drove the scenic route home from Myrtle early this morning. I always take 40 to 95 from Raleigh...87 S. from Fayetteville...131 from Tar Heel...right on 41 and back left onto 131...410 to 701 to 9 to beaches...I thought Bladenboro was especially nice this morning around 6:00 time...3 hrs and 15 minutes...3 short stops.
This is my usual route, although I've done a couple variations south of Tar Heel.

I sometimes take 410 from Dublin on down. I thought about staying on 87 to E-Town, but not sure about the traffic on 710 south to Whiteville.
