I'm trying to figure out what the sales tax is on basic groceries (eggs, milk, bread, etc). I see that the sales taxes in Wake, Durham and Orange Counties runs 7 to 7.5%. How much of that is applied to basic groceries?

I realize that prepared food purchased in a grocery store is taxed differently (higher) than basic groceries, but even after calling a couple grocery stores (Whole Foods and Trader Joe's), the customer service people weren't sure of the sales tax percentage on basic groceries. I guess their registers are programmed to do the calculations, but I'd like to know the amount. Thanks in advance!

Most food is 2%. The state tax rate is 4.75% and there is a 2% tax added on for Wake county for items not listed as food or exemptions.

Thanks! Looks like the total sales taxes in the triangle run from 6.75 to 7.5.

Sorry - I searched for a thread on sales tax in NC and didn't realize I wasn't on the general forum until after I posted this.

Tonight I was studying my grocery receipt from BiLo because I couldn't figure out why the tax was so high and got dizzy breaking down all the items. I bought a jar of Konsyl which was $14.99 and was charged $1.01 tax (6.75% - 2% Macon County and 4.75% State)

I usually don't pay much attention to sales tax when I shop, since it is what it is, and there's nothing I can do about it, but I was surprised that psyllium powder would be taxed @ 6.75%. So, I guess after you get here, they don't want you to move.

What does not qualify as food for the 2% tax is sometimes surprising.

Konsyl(had to Google) is a vitamin supplement. Medicine and vitamins do not count as food in NC. If it was shelved in the health and beauty isle you can usually assume it will not qualify for the reduced rate.
