Not northeast Raleigh! That is not a desirable area and super far from Durham and Cary. The traffic is so bad going that way. It will take you at least an hour 1 way.
So you wouldn't consider Wakefield a desirable area? Or Falls River? Northeast Raleigh is a fairly large area and the vast majority of it I would consider pretty desirable.

You are correct, the vast majority is fine but some of the neighborhoods are hit or miss. It would be hard to know the bad areas if you aren't familiar with the area. They aren't always obvious by looking. Raleigh does a good job of sneaking that stuff in where you wouldn't expect it. And traffic going from Cary out that way is a PITA. However I mentioned Knightdale/Wendell because the expressway isn't too congested.
Thanks for everyones input. We actually looked at a couple places in knightdale and it only 15 minutes to get to Cary... i was pretty shocked... hows planters walk (something like that)... how about the area near Enloe high school? I appreciate everyones' input.
As far as living in Wilson, we live in the most "suburban" part of town, in North Wilson, but... it's super "clique-y"... can't wait to get out of this pretentious, righteous, bubble of a town.. LOL!!

The area near Enloe is in the process of gentrification. I would live there ,it's going to keep rising in price due to being close to downtown. It's a main corridor. Housing is older stock some very nice and some less maintained. Lots of flipping and remodels. Great area for dog owners, lots of fenced in back yards. Amenities have yet to catch up . Not much to walk too unfortunately. A little Gritty on the outskirts. It's in the one street good ,next street questionable kind of phase at this moment. Not suburban in nature.
Thanks cyn7cyn!! I'm so overwhelmed, this isn't fun anymore : /
Unfortunately more than $1200 a month on rent is really pushing it (our mortgage is a little more then half that), until we get used to it, I guess... there are a couple of places we're going to see in Cary that seem to be in established neighborhoods, but I wonder why the rent is so low... Seabrooke and Tarlow...
How's knightdale? We went to my job in Cary and drove to Knightdale and it only took 15 min, that was around "planter's walk" i think that's what it was called.
We looked at a house last week on Haska, and we didn't like the neighborhood AT ALL!! SO if we look in knightdale, I feel like its going to be just as exhausting!

I live in Wakefield and my commute to Chapel Hill is 40 minutes max one way, door to door.

OP, have you considered Holly Springs, or is much of what's out there beyond your budget?

My point is that it's not right to paint one entire section of a city as being one thing, much akin to people that say all of Durham is bad because of a few areas. If there are bad spots, the best way to make them known is to point those specific areas out, not an entire area of the city. That's how misinformation gets spread.

As someone who is lurking but actively taking in all this good information, could you share what ways someone could find out what's not as desirable as the next town, if you can't tell by looking? I know this can be a touchy subject on a forum, so if you could share how I could research this on my own, I would appreciate it. I know I can look up crimes in the area, but I don't know what else to do to find those 'sneaky' areas.

Ok here we go.. First let me say that I am a minority on this forum. I'm not financially even middle class Being lower income means I am often living where other lower income people reside so I have some experience in this matter. Raleigh has reduced the amount of full scale housing projects but the people didn't move away. Many of those projects were downtown and wouldn't jive with the revitalization so they were torn down and residents were moved into the Section 8 program. If your not familiar it's where your rent is heavily subsidized. I'm not sure if there is a way to check how many properties in an area are in the program. But that would be a big indicator of possible issues with home appearance, crime and yard maintenance etc...
Thanks greenie72! Those were the words I was looking for... Now... How do I check if an area has subsidized rentals?
