Duke has the top rated retinal care in the state, rated in the top ten in the country.
I dont think you couid go wrong with any of their docs, but I will relate one story that makes me appreciate the Duke Medicine philosophy (it's not my only example). DH has had two detached retinas, both 25+ years ago. When we lived in Phoenix and received most of our medical care in the Banner Health System, the retina specialists wanted him to come in once a year for an exam. Until he went on medicare, that cost us money. Twenty years of exams that showed nothing but "you're doing great." So we move to Raleigh, hook up with Duke, and I make an appointment with Dr Hahn at Duke Eye Center.
Hahn does his exam, says "you're doing great" and asks where DH goes to get his perscription for eyeglasses. I tell him that we see an opthalmologist - Dr Mauro at Costco in Durham. Hahn says, "She's very good. No need for you to come back here unless there's a problem." Lost income for Duke, better for us, and left us wondering why the heck he had to see a retinal guy in Phoenix once a year for 20+ years!
I had an emergency situation with a detached retina last January(2015) Because of convenience I was able to see NC Retina Associates in Raleigh on the spot practically. My recovery was long and challenging, but in the end they took really great care of me. They have several locations including one near the 40+15-501 intersection...Chapel Hill.

I agree with the Duke recommendation.

My husband saw Dr Tamer Mahmoud at Duke for a rare retinal condition. Very capable, we would recommend. He leads the retina fellowship program at Duke I believe.
Thanks everyone. It sounds like the recommendations always come back to Duke. I appreciate it.
