I'd look for a used F-150 with the 4.6L V8. Those go forever, and get pretty close to the same MPG as the V6 did, but it's a much better engine. Or, if you wanted to go a little older you can get a good deal on the 90s models with the 4.9L Straight-6, that was a real workhorse!

There seem to be more 4.6Ls out there than 4.2s.
But, fit up to my truck? Transmission, etc? I wonder about complications.

yeah, I meant if you need to just replace your truck with a new-to-you used truck. If you decide to go that route then go with the V8 over the V6.

Get a re-built engine. You will want to keep your truck forever, so don't skimp with a used engine. I have an old farm truck that I bought new. It has a rebuilt engine and transmission and new AC even though I put less than 1000 miles on it a year. But it is so convenient when I need a truck, and it doesn't cost $50,000. It would take me across country if I needed it to.

Yep.
Good advice. Trying to convince my inner cheapskate voice....

But, $6000?
Picking through the rebuilts and coming up with a more palatable price will be interesting.

That was the basis of my question, for local shops, and I have a few to talk to.

Check with Modern Service in downtown Cary. Fair prices and excellent workmanship and follow-up.

If you have time do what I did (in reverse). I bought a car with a blown motor and a good transmission (needed the transmission). Cars are cheap when they don't run, like scrap yard cheap (bought mine for $250). All told after everything the transmission swap cost me about $100 out of pocket including the tow to my house, selling the carcass to the scrappers, etc. Car is a '95, has been in the family since new. First car I ever drove, learned to drive in it, and I'm 34 now. Tough to let it go, I know what you mean. But I wasn't going to dump thousands into it. Initial quotes were in the $3k range for a used transmission, $5k for a new one. I swapped it three years ago, so far so good (knocking on wood). It's my daily driver even still to this day.

For a mechanic I recommend Tildens Auto on Atlantic Ave in Raleigh...its a ways out from Cary but they are straight-up guys, no bull. For a replacement engine, you can try to buy a State surplus truck and pull the engine out of it. Surplus Division has a dedicated website, you have to create an account and then you submit your sealed bid online. It ain't like ebay where you can keep raising your bid...you got 1 shot to bid. The vehicle descriptions are not detailed, but you can go inspect the vehicle, and start the engine,...but no driving is allowed. You can also see on their website what prices they received from the previous auction sales (look in "Awarded Bids" I think it's called.). Good luck on the truck...and on the house sale in Candlewood,,,,get all you can man,,,,helps me w/ my house value!
