Looking for a change of pace is really it and I want a better quality of life and cost of living. I'm burnt out on NYC after all these years. I have family in Raleigh and Eastern NC, so it seems like a logical move for me.
I'm sorry, what did you just say? I promised myself I'd stay out of all future pizza/bagel/Chinese food threads because it's all been said, but this one is a new twist.
Most of the pizza places in the Triangle are privately owned and by people who coincidentally owned pizza places in the NY/NJ area and relocated down here bringing the very same menus with them. Do we have our fair share of Papa Johns/Domino's et al? Yes, just like in the NY/NJ area.
And good bagels are hard to come by in Western NY too, let's not let that one go either. Plus I still think it's bagel snobbery that's the problem here, not the bagels themselves.
I tried to rep you for this excellent post but you have been highly rep-able lately and I not permitted but OP the above post says it all with regard to pizza and bagel. Luckily you also have a good outlook about your move and seem educated about the food scene here. Good luck with your move.
I see I've opened up a can of worms! My background is as a restaurant marketer (switching sectors now), so I'm glad I opened up the can! From what I've seen, Raleigh has a great emerging restaurant scene. I'm excited to explore.
Being from NYC and growing up on Long Island (highly Italian and Jewish if you don't know), I would never hold another area's pizza or bagels to those here, but I'm also willing to give them a fair shot!
Go ahead an hold them to it, my favorite pizza place on Long Island is also in Apex, owned and operated by the very same family. In a blind taste test I could never tell you which slice came from Northport and which one came from Apex, water difference be damned. And the best local bagel shop in my area, NY Bagel and Deli, makes their bagels exactly the way the were made in Queens when I was growing up and on Long Island where I lived before relocating.
Y'know what food category you absolutely can't get down here, 24 hour diner (which I realize isn't actually a food category but I'm sticking with it anyway). And people, please don't throw Waffle House at me, it's simply not the same thing.

Agree with you here, but unfortunately, that's true almost everywhere. Even in Boston there are hardly any 24-hour or late-night diners anymore.
But seriously, enough about pizza and bagels. How about some of you ex-New Yorkers get together and open a Jewish deli? I'm dying for some good pastrami over here.

Oh my goodness, lets not re-ignite the vicious Diner death-match thread!
