If you've been a patron you'll be as sad as the rest of us to learn this. After 30 years in business, Sal's Pizza & Italian Restaurant in south Durham will be closing on Friday, Sept 11.

I've been a patron for over 25 and watched their kids grow up. I've loved their homemade sauces and salad dressings and everything made from scratch. For old school no frills Italian this has been our go to place. This is what happens when mom & pop places don't get enough customers when everyone runs to the new trendy places opening up downtown.

Sal's is located right on the edge of RTP on Hwy. 55 next to Papa John's. They have a lunch buffet M-F and one on Saturday nights that is much larger with several pastas dishes on it. Their full menu is available all the time.

They are taking reservations for the last couple nights they'll be open and for large parties as usual. If you want to bid Joe, the lovely owner from Sicily and his family good-bye and have one more fix (or 2 or 3 or 4, like some of us are doing!) of their delicious edibles, now's the time.

That's too bad. I would guess that the Papa John's next door is taking at least some of their customer traffic. I know it's not the same quality but some people don't care.

NOOOOOOOOO!

I love Sal's ( no relation ) They are my destination for NY style pizza. I love going there because it reminds of restaurants I grew up going to including to the two older gentleman sitting up front speaking Italian!

Are they closing due to lack of revenue or are they retiring?

I think it's a little of both. Forced retirement, you might say.

Hmmm, my DH would go there sometimes. That's too bad, but nothing lasts forever, especially if they had no one to take over.
