so i decided i wanted to move to Raleigh after one visit, a lot of research and a few recommendations from people that know me well... was planning on moving in the Summer, but found a house i loved in an area i liked northwest Raleigh and i close in 2 weeks!! and move out there in 6 weeks!!

Now i need some advice!! i am single, young (25), female, college grad, moving out there with no job, no friends, just my first house!! and my jeep...

Questions:

1. Good temporary staffing agencies in raleigh for Administration? or place to find a job quick besides online careerbuilder/monster?
2. Indoor Gyms around Briar Creek/Brittany Woods?? preferably with classes/cardio machines/maybe a sauna/pool?
3. Must see visits for January/February?
4. Place to find good doctors, dentists, etc.
5. General Advice for weather, new home owner out there, generally anything?

Thanks everyone!! sooo excited!!! and nervous... 4000 mile move on a whim!

Congrats to you socalkitti - I am so jealous. I have to wait til my boss retires in a couple of years before I head down there. I think my sister will be moving sooner and my daughter about the same time I move. I am so looking forward to going there. We have a friend in the vicinity of Knightdale, also from southern cal(bakersfield) and they absolutely love it there. I am sure you will to. Keep all us so cal babes who want to head down there up dated with how you are doing. Good luck, - I am sure you will do very well. Just Char

Maybe Im just a little jealous that someone can move all the way out here on their own with no job, and no job waiting on them when they get here and still buy a house.

Ive heard some pretty bad stories about California on this board, particulary the illegal alien problem, crime, cost of living, so I cant blame you at all.
Im not from Raleigh so I cant really give alot of advice about the area, but I hope everything works out. Congratulations.

Just moved here myself. Actually moved in closer to Durham near the triangle, so I'm close to both cities. However, I have driven out here twice from Los Angeles, and I think it's more like 2700 miles. When my brother helped me move a few weeks back, we drove here in less than three days. No messing around on that trip.

1. Haven't looked into this yet. I'm still consulting from afar to Los Angeles. However, I'm thinking about taking in a p/t gig, so if YOU find anything reputable, please drop me a line.

2. A few girls that I've met out here have said that Peak Fitness is the place to go. I'm checking it out this weekend since I can't find a nearby Bally's. They say it's nice, and has cardio, classes, weights, pool, sauna, tanning and more. Also, there might be a Gold's Gym and the YMCA is not supposed to be bad, but I'm not sure.

3. Must see visits... I'm working on my networking group through MySpace and other avenues. Meeting a lot of activity buddies and potential business partners, too, that way. But places to see.... haven't looked that far ahead. All people have told me is that those months are the coldest and we might be getting a heavier winter this year (my first, of course, and coming from L.A., it's gonna be an adjustment).

4. Great docs and hospitals out here. Better than Los Angeles. Just met a couple at Lowes. Wife is a nurse, and she is emailing that information, hopefully soon. I'm looking for a good general, a dentist, and a specialist. Plus, I need to check and see if my health insurance will be cheaper here. I hope!

5. Drive carefully in overcast, very cold weather due to ice. None yet, but apparently, days like that are ahead. Also, the same for leaves on a wet road... can be slippery when stopping suddenly. Make sure you have your hot water heater wrapped to save on energy. No drafts from your doors, etc.

Don't know a lot about your home, but I can share tips I'm going through with the house I just bought. And, if you are moving your stuff using a rental, I know a person in Arcadia that will give you a GREAT rate on a Budget truck (the one I used -- saved over $1500 dollars for their big truck, and much cheaper than the movers I was going to hire). He also has a trailer for your jeep that you can tow behind. Pretty easy.

PM for details of his number, and if you need any contacts for insurance, banks, loans (sounds like loan is wrapped up), etc. My first time with a big relocation like this, and so far, everything has gone well. Just be careful when driving out in six weeks -- get your trip tick from AAA, cover all the weather reports for the ride out on the 40 (the highway that goes all across the U.S.). And if you have any other questions.

Raleigh is turning out to be a great town with great opportunity. So will Durham, eventually. Have fun and good luck.

I'm doing something similar. Lots of research, very few contacts, but after a visit, I decided it was worth the leap. I've been in Boston, and the long dark winters, cost of living, and transportation nightmares aren't for me. I'm a bit older (turned 37 yesterday), but it's a similar leap into the unknown. Best of luck! Let's hope we made the right decision.

yeah, the immigrant problem doesn't bother me soo much, my family immigrated when i was a baby from far far away but as long as everyone pays taxes and learns english and are of some benefit to our society, i have nothing against anyone, but i know those aren't the immigrants that are the problem i know what it's like to try and give your family a better life.
I live in Newport Beach (The OC if you have seen that show ) so crime is low and its mainly upper middle class and above, beautiful, live 10 minutes from the beach, the problems i have here are definitely cost of living, im not one of the more priveliged, so even with a degree i can barely make it month to month renting a room... my biggest problem is traffic and ignorant rude people and the whole money run society, fake personalities and a general lack of manners and honest home values, not too many people have strong characters that i meet in my area, so it's hard to find good friends.

As for moving, im single, young and if im gonna risk losing everything to move i might as well do it while i dont have a family or anyone else to hurt in the process plus i think after a few months of money scraping and culture shock it will definitely be a move in the right direction Happy Holidays!

Good luck to you as well!! i think it is the right decision for me, hopefully for you as well, and if not, then heck, at least we tried, right? worse case scenario, you start looking for your next true home after a while and you'll have expanded your horizons a little!

Thanks CaliBoy!!! this is exactly the kind of info i need!.. you are right, it's more like 3000 miles from south OC, but i took kind of a detour last time i drove out hehe, and im sure i'll do the same again, maybe through chicago this time! I'll probably start temp work or something while im there, maybe that will lead to something or at least be some cash flow.

let me know about the fitness places if you can! im a life member to 24 hour fitness and i think the closest one is in Kentucky!! darn it! i also heard the YMCA is a good place to go workout, i guess we'll have some adjustments to make!! no more treadmills at 11 pm!!

thank you about the movers, that's one thing i do have covered already with professional movers, i dont have much, so it's not too expensive and i need my car to drive out (my lease ends before i leave so my furniture needs to be on the move before i do!) great advice about the roads, i think that will be the biggest thing to get used to! Hopefully i'll survive the winter!, i had to go and buy a jacket this week, cause i dont even own one!! i feel so unprepared for that! Thanks so much for all the info! greatly appreciated!!
