I'm looking for the best one bedroom, one bathroom apartment I can find in the Raleigh area. I don't have a problem living near NCSU. Every other place I've looked at has horrible reviews! I'm not looking for a lot of amenities, just something without cockroaches would be nice...can anyone recommend any nice apartments under $800/mo? I'm just looking for something safe and clean.

My son lives in Country Club Homes off Oberlin Road. He does not pay more than ~$750/mo for a 1BR 1BA.

I was in your position a little while ago OP. I don't envy you. If you don't mind being near NCSU, there are a lot of rentals nearby owned by small, private landlords. Think 2 to 4 unit houses/duplexes. It's tough to find these, and when they're on the market they go fast! Id check craigslist regularly, and if there's a student classifieds page (my school had one) check there. Otherwise, I recommend 2604 Hillsborough Street, Wolf Creek Apartments and University House. The roommate thing isn't so bad since you have a separate living and bathroom space behind a locked door. You're really only sharing a kitchen. And you can get paired with a non student if you ask. The amenities are great, and utilities are included all for around 500.

There's other stuff under 800, but much of it was built in the 70's-80s and it shows in terms of dated fixtures and old buildings/carpet. If you don't need newer amenities though there's stuff out there!

Asking for "the best one bedroom, one bathroom apartment I can find in the Raleigh area" and that it be under $800 is asking two different things.
