I may have a job offer back home in NC, Smithfield precisely. It's a little further than I'd like to be, but I figured that living in Clayton will keep me close to work, but also close to parents in Raleigh. Also, I'm assuming Clayton is a little bit more "happening" than Smithfield.

Does anyone make the commute from Clayton to Smithfield? What's traffic like?

I know a surprising amount of people that commute from Smithfield to Raleigh, it took them 35-40 minutes. I can't imagine Clayton to Smithfield is all that taxing of a commute.

The drive from Smithfield to Raleigh isn't really too bad. Why not try to find a "happening" part of Smithfield so your commute is next to nothing? Unless you plan on visiting your parents several times a week?

Being closer to Raleigh is actually more about access to shopping and restaurants. Smithfield-Raleigh is usually about 40min, so being in Clayton will shave off a decent chunk of time.

I have little experience with Smithfield, so I will definitely check out the area before deciding on a place to live.

Maybe I can negotiate working from home a few days a week so I can actually live in Raleigh.

That's a solid deal. I'd much rather live in Raleigh than Smithfield or Clayton, especially if you have a social life lol.

Although if you're looking to purchase a home, Clayton has some ok deals. Garner too.

generally, going anywhere west (Raleigh or Clayton) to east (Smithfield), you're going against the flow of traffic, so your commute time will be less.

12 miles. Clayton to Smithfield. 15 minutes. Clayton is a great place to live and Raleigh is a easy drive to see your parents.

Living in Clayton is great, the town has gone through and continues to grow with new restaurants and good evening life with Revival 1869, Flip Side, Tavern 42, etc., etc., etc., Clayton also provides 3 different short commutes to Raleigh not to mention roads like Rt 70 and Buffalo Road directly to Smithfield which is about 10-15 minutes.

Smithfield also is changing with some new downtown items with Brew halls etc., plus having 2 new craft breweries.

Folks bark about traffic in Raleigh, Raleigh does not even know what traffic is. Try living in Atlanta!

Great area.

Clayton has the best Chinese restaurant (Yi Ge) in the area and a good Jamaican joint (Jamaica Bite). By me that's enough to favor Clayton right there.
