However, IIRC, that's not quite how our justice system works...
The system just doesn't work for criminally insane felons.

I'd just be happy to see panhandling banned and made illegal in NC, or at least in Wake County. The pros sit at the off ramps all up and down 540 every day. Same people, same places, every day. They should have to have a "license" to do that, and have to pay taxes on that income. But better yet, I'd like to see ALL roadside panhandling banned and stopped. It makes our area look trashy, and causes unnecessary traffic slowdowns. These people are neither homeless nor "hungry". They drove a car to those locations for Pete's sake! I can show you where they park and walk from each day!

The ones who like to approach you at gas stations, parking lots etc are just brash arrogant people looking to intimidate or pity some sucker into giving them $5. And then you have the ones waiting for some fool to open their wallet, see plenty of cash, and then rob you. That's why ypou should NEVER take out your moneyclip, wallet or purse when approached.

The vast majority of the homeless population are not criminally insane felons....(man this just sounds like a propaganda piece against the homeless or some type of old school yellow journalism title). Many of them are veterans who fell on hard times, and if they have mental issues it is most likely a combination of the situation, solitude of being shunned by society, and hopelessness. Further more society has already had similar ideas and it was terrible. The American Eugenics society sterilized those they deemed unfit, which included the poor, those with "mental issues", African Americans, Italian and Irish immigrants etc. Hitler even based his eugenics program off our program, in which the US praised until his genocide of the Jews.

Hitler's debt to America | World news | The Guardian

Quote:
Germany had certainly developed its own body of eugenic knowledge and library of publications. Yet German readers still closely followed American eugenic accomplishments as the model: biological courts, forced sterilisation, detention for the socially inadequate, debates on euthanasia. As America's elite were describing the socially worthless and the ancestrally unfit as "bacteria," "vermin," "mongrels" and "subhuman", a superior race of Nordics was increasingly seen as the answer to the globe's eugenic problems. US laws, eugenic investigations and ideology became blueprints for Germany's rising tide of race biologists and race-based hatemongers.
With close to half of all Americans only being a few paychecks away from being in the same position, that's just extreme position to take.

Nearly Half Of American Households Are 1 Emergency Away From Financial Disaster, Report Finds

Quote:
Nearly 44 percent of American households don’t have enough savings to cover their basic expenses for three months in the event of a financial emergency like losing a job or paying for unexpected medical care, according to a recent report from the Corporation for Enterprise Development. That figure has changed little from last year, the Assets and Opportunity Scorecard found.
While not perfect, I think what Portland Oregon is doing(tiny house villages) is a good start to getting many back on their feet.

Then we need to have a new system that DOES work, one respects the rights of all people, those that might need help, those that might need incarceration and those who might be potential victims. You can't go from "this isn't working" to "cops should shoot them" in one step. That's not what our country is or should be about.

The problem is, a system won't necessarily "respect the rights of all people" because some mentally ill will not accept help, even if they're a danger to themselves or others.

And others will get stabilized on meds, think they're A-OK, then ditch the meds (usually due to side effects, but sometimes due to other factors) and then they're back to being a problem again.

How do you resolve that? Some mentally ill people need to be put in a secure facility sometimes against their will and that causes conflict with those who want to respect their rights.

Difficult situation.

You hit the nail on the head, buddy!

As portraid in the movie "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", many mentally ill cannot handle their treatment without Nurse Ratchett to be sure they follow their treatment plan.

Mod Edit

Vagrancy used to be a crime, allowing the judge to commit the mentally ill beggars for treatment if possible, Mod Edit

We are hypocrites nationally, pretending to help the mentally ill, but only sending them out to die a horrible death.

If we can't fix them and they are a danger to society, what more can we do?

Well, one thing you can't do is summarily execute them.
