And now I need to be talked down off a mental ledge. We have a rising kindergartner and a toddler at home. We have been accepted to Partnership and wait-listed at Brooks. But now I wonder if we should have given our base school, Lynn Road, the benefit of the doubt, especially considering that our chances at Brooks are probably slim. It's such a nice facility, and Partnership is tiny - they definitely make do with what they have, but it's an act of improvisation. Both schools have sort of middling test scores. Neighbors fled LR for some reason, but I visited and found them to be on the way up. They are getting extra attention from the district and I won't be surprised if they are quite desirable in a few years. They have a traditional calendar now that is likely to change to year-round in 2017.
Trying to be rational: I really love the calendar at Partnership, and the feeder pattern to Moore Square Middle. It seems the easiest path to an AG magnet middle school for us since we have no advantages in the magnet lottery. (Older daughter is already a math whiz so I bet she will qualify for AG.) We have heard good things about Partnership and visited twice. I am hung up on the lack of facilities and curricular "extras," but we can easily make up for that with music and art lessons outside of school.
I'm venting, I know. It will be OK no matter what, right? Or maybe - deus ex machina - we will be pulled into Brooks off the waiting list. In that case I might actually regret the calendar (I like to travel at odd times) but appreciate the curriculum.
I attended a magnet school K-5th grade. I have always been curious what the difference was between all of these schools, such as public, private, charter, magnet and base... unless base is the same as public. Sorry, that's my first time hearing the term base school.

Base, magnets and charters are all public schools.
Base = the school you are assigned to based on your addressed
Magnet = A group of schools run by the WCPSS that have a variety of themes and electives. They are run by the WCPSS
Charter = a public school that is regulated by the state, but can be run by anyone (non-profit or for profit)
Private = you pay for your kid to go to school there.
