Hi, we are looking for a 2/2, or larger home to rent for 9-12 months. My mom is awaiting a double lung transplant & will need to be close to Duke hospital. We are relocating from Florida so any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Budget? Do you have pets? Good credit? Funds for deposits? Anybody have a job? Will you accept an apartment?

I KNOW that sounds harsh, thougtless and cruel. It's not meant that way - it's meant to be pragmatic. Realistic. And truthful answers will help us help you.

Credit is good, Finances are good, & no pets. They would prefer a home, but may have to settle for an apartment. I haven't seen many homes available, that are close enough to the hospital. I think the Ronald McDonald House is mostly for the children's hospital.

The various extended stay hotels in Durham all have special rates for people getting hospital care. In addition if you stay three months, you don't have to pay the hotel tax. I stayed in one of these for two months once, and there were many people there for medical treatment, some there for months, and there was quite a bit of camaraderie. Many of them have two bedroom suites and all have mini kitchens. You might want to look into this as an option.

I don't know if we're allowed to link to property managers here - so suggest googling "Durham property managers" and comparing listings to location of the hospital - that may be a good route for you to go.

By close, how close do you think you need to be? If REALLY close...maybe go the apartment route, as there are quite a few around there.

Hopefully it's ok to mention property managers here - some are Allenton, Griffin, Real Estate Associates, Urban Durham - more via google.

You might be able to get a townhouse, which would be nice. I wonder if the hospital has a service that can help - it's common for people to travel to Duke.

Ah, here's some info, OP!

https://www.dukemedicine.org/locatio...odging-options

Host homes
Duke Medicine concierge service can also help arrange for stays in short-term housing in area private homes or provide rental and apartment information. These are ideal for family members visiting from out of town. Some accommodations are free while others charge a nominal fee.

Hope they can help you.

Thanks! We need to be within 15 minutes. I have emailed a few people, but no luck yet. The social worker from the hospital gave us a list of places, but they don't have anything available. Thanks for the info, I will email them now.

Several options on Craigslist. If your willing to look at town homes there will be more and cheaper options. You'll likely need a year long lease for most things.
