Hi. Do you have any input for a middle-aged, middle-income, professional couple with no children who are considering relocating from Queens, NY to Raleigh? We recently visited and found that the people and drivers we encountered were actually less friendly, courteous, helpful than some other cities. Was it just our bad luck that trip or is Raleigh less pleasant in that way than other Southern cities? Also, what are some good ways for political progressives to meet each other in Raleigh, other than moveon.org or the Democrats? Are discriminatory comments acceptable in social settings? (unfortunately, even in our 'burbs I still hear such at times). What are the temperatures like in the evenings in August? I hear of "cool breeze" evenings but that may be relative. As NYers, will we always be considered outsiders? How well do the buses run (to use before we inevitably have to get a 2nd car I guess). We enjoyed our visit overall and Raleigh is one of our two likely finalists for relocation. We would especially like to hear from former residents of New York City, especially native New Yorkers, and from natives or those who have lived for several years in the Triangle area or from Portland, Oregon. Thanks for any help you can provide.
