Hi everyone,

I've looked online & not had much luck with this. Before calling the city I thought I might post here to see if anyone is familiar with this and might have any insight.

A friend and I are starting a small house cleaning business. At least small to start. We hope to advertise the heck out of it and eventually have a crew (or 2 or 10!) working for/with us.

My question is, does Raleigh have any restrictions on hanging door hangers on people's front doors? Delivery places hang them on my door all the time & they never bother me but I can imagine that occasionally someone might be irritated at ti & I wanted to be sure I'm not violating any city ordinance by doing this.

Also, similar to the first question, what are the rules on putting up signs to advertise businesses at stop signs and stoplights (similar to campaign signs but they advertise a business or service)? I imagine this is something that's frowned upon but I see them all over town advertising one business or another. This is something I probably won't do (unless I hear it's absolutely ok) but I thought I would at least look into it.

If anyone has any knowledge of any of this or any other suggestions I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Post about your business on NextDoor - that's not a bad place to start in your neighborhood.

I second the NextDoor suggestion. I tend to throw out anything hanging on my door, left on my driveway or taped to my mailbox.

As for NextDoor, my advice would be to find someone who has already joined, provide your service for free in exchange for a recommendation and then have them post that recommendation. I live in North Raleigh and someone made their cleaning person available for new business, within a week her entire schedule was filled up and new requests were being wait-listed.

I third NextDoor. Honestly if stuff is hanging on my door or mailbox I generally throw it away after looking at it and making a note NOT to use that business in the future. But that may just be me...However if you send a discount postcard I do look at those and have used two of them for various house stuff (one for lawn care and another for an exterminator).

I do the same thing, I completely disregard door hangers and mailers - it's a non-factor when deciding to use a service or not and if you send me a bunch of them, you'll get put on my list of businesses to avoid.

I agree with what someone else said, businesses are recommendation/review driven now a days so start getting some good recommendations on NextDoor and reviews on Google/Yelp and that'll do just as much wonders as door hangers.

The NC Small Business & Technology Development Center is a great, and free, resource for small business issues in NC.

I do the same thing. Part of me feels bad, but not a large enough part to give my business to them!

I'm probably going to vote for Deborah Ross now that I've gotten door hangers and stuff in the mail every week from the Americans for Prosperity!

Thanks so much for recommendation for NextDoor. We'll definitely be giving that a try.

Unfortunately, we already have the door hangers so they might be coming to a door near you soon. If so, I apologize in advance. lol Oh well, even if we only get a few customers I think it'll be worth it, especially if we can get a few referrals from those.
