I am interested in getting into carpentry as a carpenter's helper most likely. Upon volunteering my time with Habitat For Humanity, I have found that I am mostly interested in new builds rather than say additions, renovations or seasonal rooms. I would like to get on with a tract builder or a well known local builder that treats their employees well, but I am not sure where to start so I would love to have the fine folks of Citydata recommend me a few places to start looking or any other advice for that matter!
Most builders do not actually do the carpentry work - they hire subs. You need to find a subcontractor that would be willing to take you on. What type of carpentry are you interested in? Framing? Trim/finish work? I would look around at some new builds that you like and find out who the sub is, then you can speak with them directly.
Glad to hear you want to do carpentry. Our society needs more people who are expert in the trades. If you want to be a contractor yourself one day also keep in the back of your mind that there are progams that will allow you to become licensed in a trade. Maybe Wake Tech offers those programs.
Learn Spanish. This is not a flippant remark. Your early-career colleagues will speak Spanish. If you advance to being a foreman or subcontractor your subordinates will speak Spanish.
Thanks for the suggestions so far! I'll see if I can't call around to some of the tract builders to see who their subcontractors are. I am definitely interested in framing at this point but trim carpentry will come next.
I'm working on my Spanish! I took a year of it in high school but recently downloaded an app called Duolingo(highly recommend) on my phone. It is free and amazing!
Any other suggestions? Anyone know of any good framing companies in the Raleigh area?

I don't work in the construction trades but have an idea for your consideration. Go to any of the major lumber suppliers in this area including Lowe's and Home Depot. Visit the Contractor Desk which is located at the far end of the store, near the lumber. Go at a "slow time" such as 2-3pm and strike up a conversation with store employees. They work with subs all the time and are "tuned in" to that rumor mill.
