THey're all good, really. You can't go wrong.

Here's a link to lots of NC Beach cams: Wrightsville Beach NC Surf Report Webcam and Weather - SurfChex.com

The link says Wrightsville 'cause that's the first one that pops up, but you can switch between OBX ones, Wrightsville, Carolina, Kure, Topsail, etc.

I think the actual beach is a little nicer at the southern beaches. The sand is whiter and finer and the slope is more gentle. The surfing is better at the OBX and lots of history there.

I actually looked it up because I was curious myself as to how many of the OBX beaches had lifeguards; I've seen them at some but not all.

yes! I watch my kids carefully, but having lifeguards around is so important. there is at least one death every summer at the ocean beaches on long island, even when there are lifeguards. my neighbors lost their 17 year old son a few years ago. He and his brother got swept up by the current, and they were only able to save one. So scary.

poppydog - love the link! thank you!!

It's kind of a gray day today and unseasonably cool. Be sure to check back on a sunny warm day. Long range forecast has this gray breaking on Sunday and then warming back up to normal (80s) temps next week. Sure to be more folks out on the beaches then.

I am not worried - it's been grey here for weeks. It has been like the fall - can't stand it. Only been in the 60s and it's May!!! Ugh. I am just going to keep an eye on the current - this cam will help alot. The fire island tide can get really, really high. When it is that high, we don't let the kids swim. It's just too dangerous. But then other days you can walk so far out bc the tide is so low. It all depends. But usually by August the water temp is great. We will go to the ocean in June when the water is cold, and the kids don't care - but we do! LOL

We have a 6 year old and he can swim in the ocean without issue. Do one of the outerbanks because they also offer sound side options. We find the sound is the perfect solution for him as it doesn't have the waves and he can swim unassisted there.

Depends on the time of year and what part of the sound you're in. It can be but nothing a little bug spray won't fix. Also they leave you alone when you're in the water.

I haven't been to the outer banks yet, but I've never encountered bugs at any southern beach nearly as bad as the biting flies I encountered one weekend at Robert Moses Beach on LI. Sand gnats can be annoying, but those flies HURT.

Depends on which way the wind is blowing. If it's coming from the ocean it blows them away, but if comes across the sound it can blow them to you. We do have biting flies here as well.
