Reminds me that when the first 757s were delivered to Eastern in late 1982, then-CEO Frank Borman said they would save the airline. Well, not quite, but I agree they do things no other aircraft can. Maybe the A321LR, but cargo capacity is a question. As far as I know, DL has not revealed its intentions for its long-haul 757s.

RDU used to see EA, AA, and DL 757s all the time. Not so much anymore.

My understanding is the LR doesn't solve the issue with the current 321 in that it uses the same wing which is the biggest issue. I don't know if the NEO engines will increase output enough to make a difference, the LR just adds fuel to the design.

One thing most people don't realize is the 737 and 757 share similar cabin dimensions. I'd much rather be in an Airbus over a Boeing narrowbody, personally, I find them more spacious.

That's right, the Airbus narrowbodies are wider on the inside than the 707/727/737/757 cabin. It makes a difference, or at least it used to before airlines converted economy cabins to 30 inch pitch. Hard to enjoy elbow room when your knees are up against metal.

No doubt, the A321LR will require a longer runway than the 757 for a 4000 nm flight. But this is drifting OT.

American also flew B-727-223s and MD-80's out of RDU back in their hub days (1987-1995). B-727s were loud regardless if they were the 100 series or the stretched 200 series. AA also flew the DC-10 and B-767 to RDU as well.

The widebodies (DC-10/B-767) were better equipped with noise suppression than the older 727s/MD80s...

The B-707s were long gone when AA added RDU as a North/South hub...

The JT8D on the 727 was a fairly low bypass turbofan, almost a turbojet in design. The larger fans of the larger engines on the widebodies offered for a higher bypass ratio and lower N1 fan speed which significantly reduces noise. The new technology now is geared turbofan engines like in the new Bombardier CSeries, they are so quiet...a reduced N1 speed and even higher bypass ratio.

Yes, when the RDU hub opened in 1987 AA sent its remaining 727-023s here. The -023s were retired a few years later when AA acquired F-100s. In the 1980s EA still had a few 727-025s that came here. The original DC-9-10s, a handful of BAC 111s operated by AL/US, and the first-gen 727s were the most noisy passenger aircraft at RDU in the 1980s. All were gone by the early 1990s, thank heavens.

As for cargo aircraft, I don't recall seeing many 707s at RDU but there were lots of DC-8s that had not been re-engined.

I don't know what new aircraft is flying into RDU but I just heard it and I heard it yesterday. It appears to either be a 737 or A319. I came in to check on Flightradar24 but I guess I wasn't quick enough. I went to Flightaware and the closest arrival was a B733 from Baltimore/Washingtion Intl so I guess that was it.

The engines on it sound phenomenal. I can clearly hear it coming for at least 10 seconds before it is overhead. Both times I hear it I thought it was a multi-engine prop plane. In fact, now that I listened to it on the tube it sounds very similar to an approaching B-17 until it flies over when the sound changes to clearly a turbofan.

Here's a great example:

Hard to believe a turbofan sounds like that.

So, they unveiled 8 or 9 potential plans last night, supposedly, they will be up for viewing on their site today at some point. Home - RDU Vision 2040 . Evidently, they are looking at options all over the place for terminals and runways.

They'll post it on the site after tonight's meeting, but WNCN has some photos of the different alternatives. Little hard to see though.

RDU Airport plans may include 23 more boarding gates by 2040 | WNCN

I know I'm going to be pretty upset if they use something like option 2 with the new runway more south of 5R/23L after all these years of saying the next one would be on the other side as it will drive more air traffic over my house.

And it's a bit curious that they aren't doing more meetings after this stuff is more available. Maybe they will later.

I also see nothing shown over in the land over by Lake Crabtree. Does that mean they've given up completely on doing something there?
