I am from London, UK and will be in Durham, NC for a little while within the next few months. I would like to know what Durham is like in terms of day-to-day life, weather, raising a family, job prospects and the people? i.e. are they welcoming of foreigners? Also, are there any other nearby states that are better for any of these things if not North Carolina?

Certainly TINY compared to London, but I think it's a great place to be! You could also buy a mansion for a years worth of rent in some parts of London.

Your questions are a little too general to really answer. It's like most US cities it's size. More culture than most (writing this from an outdoor blues and beer festival). It's generally a very welcoming place, at least that has been our experience.

I love it. Just make sure that if you moved you don't expect London caliber amenities.

Durham is great. It's a medium sized city with a creative vibe, well-known university (Duke), less well known HBCU (historically black college and university in NC Central University), lots of art, tech, etc., built on the foundation of a former manufacturing economy. They're having a big Moog (the synthesizer) festival this weekend, too.

Lots of foreigners, British, and other countries as well. No worries there.

Oh no, I'm worried I may find it boring if it's 'tiny' compared to London...

Can I ask how it even ended up on your radar? It's certainly not a place I'd expect anyone to look at if they want something London-like. London metro = ~14,000,000 population. Durham is about 500,000. If you took just the museums in London and put them together it's probably bigger than the whole of downtown Durham. Again, for a city it's size there is an incredible amount to do, I love it here and personally would rather live here than London in a heartbeat (have family there). It sounds like you are looking for a NYC, LA, chicago, etc. City though, which it certainly is not.

Will be studying there for a year abroad. Didn't really have a great deal of a choice as to where I could go which is why I chose North Carolina and decided to take the opportunity.
