NCDOT should fix the ridiculous proliferation of US 70 routes in that area (US 70, US 70 Bypass, US 70 Business, US 70 Alternate). There should be one and only one US 70, along what's now designated US 70 Bypass. The other three should be decommissioned from the US system and given NC state highway numbers like NC 170, NC 270, and NC 370 -- all of which are unassigned. Or, if you want to be a traditionalist, use NC 701, NC 702, and NC 703; they're unassigned too.
Here's what I would do once I-42 gets signed:
-Remove US-70 from the Clayton Bypass and I-40 and put it back on what's now US-70 Business through Clayton. The Clayton Bypass would be signed solely as I-42.
-Remove US-70 Bypass in Selma and sign it as I-42 only.
I doubt Smithfield and Pine Level would be willing to give up US-70 Business and Alternate. Goldsboro recently asked NCDOT to shift US-70 Business from Ash Street to US-70. Thankfully, NCDOT didn't go through with it.
AASHTO typically didn't like shifting US routes back onto old alignments, but they don't seem to frown on it as much these days. They kinda set a precedent when they allowed NCDOT to shift US-117 back to it's old 2-lane alignment between Goldsboro & Wilson once I-795 took over the freeway alignment.
What would it take for that 6 mile strip of road around Smithfield to increase the speed to 70mph? From the jail/Neuse River to the new Peedin Extension Interchange area. West Oak Street would need a longer off/on "ramp" or remove the interchange. But other than that.

The at-grade access at Firetower Road would need to be completely eliminated, as does the access at W. Oak Street. NCDOT is closing off the median crossover at Firetower Road, but access from either side of US-70 will remain for the time being. IIRC neither one of those intersections are planned to become interchanges, so once those two are closed off, there's no reason NCDOT couldn't raise the speed limit to 70mph.
Right now, that stretch of US-70 could easily handle a 60mph speed limit. I don't see any reason to leave it at 55mph.

Yeah, it seems like a relatively inexpensive issue to get the speed up. Once the Wilson Mills interchanges get built, you'll have interstate speeds from Raleigh to Smithfield.

Yep and I'll be glad when it happens. Don't forget that the interchange at Stevens Chapel Road/Davis Mill Road is supposed to open sometime this month as well.
This is kinda ridiculous of seeing all the freeways and interchanges that they are planning for small cities. Maybe they are trying to make a big city over there?
Even they want to upgrade US-17 from an expressway to freeway.
The Jamesville bypass is okay though. I like it.
I think that's a little too crazy that they are planning... lol
Being a self-proclaimed "road geek", I don't ever think there could be too much planning, especially when it comes to road construction, which sometimes moves at a glacial pace. I think it's always good to have multiple plans ready, just in case, since funding can come and go in an instance and who knows if this new trillion dollar infrastructure bill will ever happen, but it's always good to have some "shovel ready" projects in your back pocket.

It's more about finding new ways to connect the big cities - the small cities just happen to be in the way
What are all these projects he is posting? They are part of the I87 plan right? If not why on earth are we building freeways in middle of nowhere.... this just isnt right.
