To keep my two boys working on their writing over the summer I plan to have them write some reviews. We want to visit local doughnuts shops, so they can try the doughnuts and write reviews of each shop. Can you respond with your favorite doughnut shop so we can add to our list of places to try? Thanks!

Yeah Rise is very popular here. It is a local franchise that started in Durham and has expanded to a handful of locations around the triangle.

The Phoenix Bakery in downtown Pittsboro. They're all delicious, but the boston cream will knock their socks off.

Duck Donuts, Cary. I've banned myself from ever visiting that establishment again. It's too good.

My opinion - Rise is the best by far.

The Apple uglies in OBX however - best donut in the state.

To qualify my opinion I need to point out that in general, I don't eat donuts.

However I will always eat Duck Donuts because they are really that good. I avoid driving near their location in North Raleigh because it's too easy to justify stopping in for a quick half-dozen (y'know, in case the kids want 'em).

Make sure you try the maple/bacon combination, I promise you won't regret it.
