Hi,

Does anyone know of summer camps in this area suitable for kids on autism spectrum ? I have a kid in elementary and wanted to learn of options in this area. Summer is tad bit far, but the benefit enrollment ends this month at most employers, and hence would like to know.

Thanks,

I'm not sure where you live or how far you are willing to drive for a camp...but the Kraft YMCA ( Apex/Holly Springs) and Finley YMCA ( N. Raleigh) both offer Camp GRACE which is a day camp for children with PDDs or who are on the spectrum. I'm trying very hard to get the same thing started in Chapel Hill but it probably won't be up and running until summer 2018 unfortunately.

Camp Friendly is put on by City of Raleigh for kids with special needs. Not sure exactly what services they offer but I'd look into that.

You may also check with your child's medical team. My daughter has different health issues, so I'm basing on that, but her medical team at Duke includes social workers, and they keep us updated of various related activities, including camps. I know they do a lot for various special needs groups, so it's worth looking into.

The Levin JCC in Durham has a special needs inclusion program for their camps. More info here https://levinjcc.org/camp-shelanu/sp...eds-inclusion/. Their camps are open to all (needn't be Jewish).

It's not in this area specifically, but a reasonable drive away - look into Camp Carefree near Greensboro - they have different weeks for different situations.

A few family psychologists offer social skills camps in the summer (just google them to find them). You might also call TEACH in Chapel Hill. We were in that program but it is too far for us now (we are in Raleigh). They have quite a few programs and may have one that fits or can recommend one. My 5 year old is in kindergarten and has done great with soccer at Lil kickers so I'm thinking of looking to a camp like that for him if they have one. He is high functioning and in a regular kindergarten classroom, to give you an idea of his level of function.
