We are planning to relocate to the Triangle area in the next year or so. We're leaning toward Durham (wahm so location not really an issue), and were wondering if anyone has experience with or recommendations for specific schools in the area, both public and private. We can be flexible as far as location, since there's no commute to factor in. Have elementary aged kids. Thanks!

some of it depends on how old your children are.

Durham has good schools now, some schools on the definite upswing as it changes to higher socioeconomic demographics, and it has some great private schools. Not really known for parochial/religious schools.

And if you're working from home, then any particular reason Durham versus another one of the cities/towns that makeup our area?

Just FYI, I live in SW Durham and I love it because everything is no more than a half-hour drive, and that's if I go to Raleigh. Shopping, live music, restaurants -- I rarely drive more than 20 minutes to everything. I am ridiculously happy here.

Our kids are 5 and 8...housing in Durham seems more affordable than Chapel Hill, and it feels a little more manageable in terms of traffic and generally getting around than Raleigh. Some of what I've read sounds like Raleigh school districting can also be a little unpredictable. These are just impressions, though, which may or may not be correct!

That sounds great - are there specific neighborhoods in SW Durham that you'd recommend?

Immaculata is a great parochial school in Durham.

And... pssst! OP, even though Durham has made leaps-and-bounds progress in recent years, there are some folks including some real estate pros who will love, love, LOVE to steer you to Cay-ry or one of the other suburbs. Durham is great; many of those towns are great too; have a great visit and enjoy your move to the region!

make note, I said nothing about "should go to Cary or anywhere in Wake County". But surely if someone says "I can live anywhere because I work from home. How are Durham schools?" then we might wonder why they say Durham. The OP explained why.

I'm from Durham, and a product of Githens and Jordan. I have clients with kids in Durham schools.
