If I have a green arrow for a U turn I am not yielding to anyone. I do not enjoy being rear ended. If I am making a right turn I would make sure it's clear before making the turn. Not all laws make sense and this is a good example of common sense. The U turns are screwy enough, there's no need to complicate them more.

Let me know how that works out for you. I know it's possible to make a U-turn and be out of the way, if you start to make a turn and position yourself in the left most lane. Then wait for people turning right before you go.
This was confusing to me coming from CA, where it is very clear U-turn with a green arrow does NOT ever have to yield to right turns, because the right turner would have a red light if the U-turner had a green arrow.
My understanding in NC is that yes, if a sign is there saying U-Turn must yield, well then yes, you must yield, regardless of if you agree or not.
Interesting if there is no sign- I would probably err on caution and assume I was to yield to the car turning right.

This is how Ive always done it and no issues at all. If the right turn lane has a red light most people stop and will see cars are making the U turn and will wait. There are some lights there the right turn will not be red, and I think TW Alexander/Glenwood is one of them. If I am making a U turn there I wait for clear traffic.
This problem used to exist at Morrisville Parkway and NC 55 before Morrisville Parkway was extended, where drivers on westbound Morrisville Parkway would make a u-turn on green, despite there being a sign that said right-turners off of NC 55 had the right-of-way thanks to the right-turn signal being green at the same time. Eventually they just removed the right-turn signal from NC 55...

I'm not sure it even matters - people come flying up in their right-turn lane, take a quick glance left, and keep on going. Most don't even come to a complete stop, nevermind look for people making u-turns.

That'll get you into a wreck in some places. For example, the current signalization of Walnut Street onto Southbound US-1. Walnut Street traffic has a solid green left-arrow onto US-1/64. Traffic exiting from US-1 and turning right onto Walnut has a solid green right-arrow. I've annotated this in the image below:
Traffic at the left turn onto US-1/64 also has a sign that also says "U-TURN YIELD TO RIGHT TURN" but nobody ever pays attention to it, despite it being beside the bloody signals:
If you don't yield to make your u-turn, you are going to be slamming head on into traffic that has the signalized right of way to turn right onto Walnut Street there.
Cary PD police reports show accidents on Walnut St. involving U-turners and right-on-red turners.
Nobody seems to stop before doing a right on red, and I suspect not all drivers can read overhead English signage hung near traffic signals.
Sure wish all immigrants had to learn English within 5 years of being a resident or whatever, but that is a non-local discussion.
