It's Erwin Rd. It can be busy in the morning. Duke School is located on Erwin Rd so there is a rush of folks taking their kids in. I don't usually go that way at that time, but it is one of my favorite back ways. Traffic was noticeably heavier when I had to go that way a few years ago in the morning during school drop off time. I would allow a little extra time from other times of day.
I assumed that it would be a quicker route than traveling along 501.
Not necessarily. I take Erwin every day, but because I live off of it so I have to. It's really hit or miss since it's only a 2 lane road. There's always a good amount of traffic during rush hour, but sometimes it's not a big deal. Other times a car needs to turn onto one of the side roads, or into Hollow Rock or something, and traffic gets backed-up behind it while it waits for an opening. Coming from CH by the time you get to where Erwin is even an option virtually all of the bad 15-501 traffic is over with anyway. Try each way though and see how it goes, YMMV.
Thanks. How long would it take to travel the roughly 7 miles from the East Chapel Hill High area to Duke during rush hour?
The biggest hold up in the afternoon is the backup on 751 from Erwin to 15-501 (turning right from Erwin onto 751 can back up all the way to TowerView/Morreene). It can take several light cycles to get through this area, and you can avoid it by taking cornwallis to erwin (if coming from south side of campus) or Lasalle/Campus Walk/Morreene/15-501/Cornwallis/Erwin (if coming from med center). Once on Erwin, it is smooth sailing 10-15 minutes. Way, way, way preferable to taking 15-501.
In the morning, if Erwin is backed up by Duke School I turn right onto Cornwallis (you can see the backup from the light).
You can get to the high school either by turning right onto weaver dairy from erwin, or taking whitfield to sunrise (my preference).
