how can you separate Chapel Hill and Carrboro especially if you are considering a place to live? They are so much a part of each other in so many ways in this regard.
The more time I spend in Chapel Hill I would say Carrboro 1st, Chapel Hill 2nd. Although I am told by a friend who used to live in CH that there is a conservative segment there as well as the "free spirit" types.
Raleigh does certainly have its "funky" areas--they'd be mostly near downtown. Lots of the older Durham neighborhoods such as Old West Durham, etc, have a really neat vibe. You'd need to visit and consider price range. There are no shortage of places in the Triangle, but the price ranges vary quite a bit.
I've lived Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and Carrboro and I'd agree with Leighbhe's rankings. Carrboro and Chapel Hill are not the same; Chapel Hill is much more conventional particularly as you get further away from Carrboro.
Carrboro seems to be the the spot. Thanks! Any recommendations on areas/neighborhoods in Carrboro? We'd be happy if we could bike/walk to most places in town.
